Youth Services
Kid’s Café Reading Readiness Program - This program is offered free of charge to students (K-12) living in the Baldwin area who are having difficulty in school. Four days a week, after-school, volunteers and staff work with 45 children. The focus is increasing the children’s reading skills and comprehension.
Back-to-School Program – Provided 50 disadvantaged children with new school clothes, underwear, socks, and shoes to begin the school year. In addition 250 school bags filled with new school supplies were given out.
Overnight Camperships Program - In 2007, "Camperships" were given to 50 children and youth to attend local day camps and overnight camps in an effort to expand their horizons and get them out into the world.
Youth Group Programs - Four after school youth groups which service children in grades K-12; Funshine Kids, Baldwin Book Club, Big Brother/Big Sisters and Boy Scouts. 35 youth attend these programs. A programs manager and volunteers provide the leadership and supervision. Children and youth are taught, nurtured, and empowered through various activities such as field trips, holiday parties, speakers, crafts, seminars, and many other positive activities.
Summer Enrichment Program - Approximately 50 children from kindergarten through fifth grade participated in a six-week summer program. Mornings are spent in group and individual reading and math tutoring sessions. Afternoons are filled with fun activities such as arts & crafts, outdoor sports, and fun field trips to the beach or other local attractions. In 2007, 2,243 summer box lunches were served.
Kids Café - Monday through Thursday, an evening meal is served before each after school youth program. In 2007, 3,100 meals were served at Kids Café.
